The Myth of Gao Hang: The Heavenly Origins of Thai Jasmine Rice
Long ago, it was believed that rice was no ordinary crop, but a divine gift from the heavens, the celestial sustenance reserved for the gods. For humankind, who dwelled on earth, nourishment could only be foraged, caught, or hunted; rice—the sacred grain of the divine, remained forever out of reach. Yet in those days, humankind was not entirely alone.
They were accompanied by a mythical companion:
Gao Hang Dog (the Nine-Tailed Dog), a wondrous creature blessed with the power to soar through the skies.
In an age of drought and desperate scarcity, the Gao Hang dog pledged to aid humanity by retrieving rice grains from the heavenly realm.
With silent resolve, it rose into the heavens. There, its nine sweeping tails danced through the air, stealing sheaves of unhusked rice from the granaries of the gods. Just as it fled, the celestial deity: Thao Fa or Thaen, caught sight of the theft and hurled his axe at the escaping creature, again and again. The blade found its mark, eight strikes, eight tails lost.
The magical dog crash-landed on earth with only one tail remaining, its power of flight lost forever. Yet within that single tail were the sacred seeds of rice. From that moment onward, humanity was no longer at the mercy of hunger.
With those divine grains, we began to cultivate rice and have done so ever since.
The inspiration for Gao Hang, our rice spirit, dates back to the 16th-century.
This celebrated spirit was traditionally distilled from the finest rice imported from Siam (modern-day Thailand) and presented as a noble tribute to foreign kings.
Today, Gao Hang revitalizes this historic connection.
We craft our spirit from 100% pure Thai Jasmine rice, meticulously fermented and distilled in Gao Hang style. This revered process yields a sublimely smooth, premium white spirit defined by its captivating character.
On the nose, it offers the evocative aroma of petrichor:
The scent of the earth after a fresh rain, layered with the comforting fragrance of newly cooked rice. On the palate, a patient maturation period bestows a delicate and exceptionally mellow flavor with a luxurious, silken mouthfeel. The nuanced sweetness of the grain is perfectly balanced by a profound savory character.
Gao Hang’s versatility shines whether served as a refreshing Highball with soda, on the rocks, or enjoyed neat.
When sipped neat, it allows you to truly connect with the soul of the grain:
a subtle, elegant sweetness that gently awakens cherished memories of happiness.
Aroma: First touch with clean notes of petrichor (rain on warm earth), followed by soulful steamed Jasmine rice and a hint of white floral.
